REDHOUSEWORKSHOP is a small firm practicing architecture, specializing in custom residential design. We are dedicated to collaborating with our clients and builders to produce a project that is relevant to our climate, lifestyle and budget. We take a modern approach to design and strive for involvement in all stages, from the schematic phase to the construction process. We value energy efficiency, context, material honesty, simplicity, and timelessness.

Founding principal, Tara Petter

Tara completed her Bachelor degree in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1994. In 1997, she moved to the Bay Area and worked at Chez Panisse for several years before returning to school for architecture. Tara received her Master's in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in 2003 and studied a year of furniture design at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. At UCB she was awarded the Design Workshop Prize for Practical Construction and Innovation, and at CCA, the All College Honors for Overall Design Excellence. She moved to Alaska in 2003 and worked for mMenseArchitects, Mayer Sattler-Smith, and Catherine Call of Blue Sky Studio, before starting her own practice in 2007. Tara is a licensed architect in Alaska.

If it suits the project and client, we like to take a design-build approach, working with RP Construction. We believe this approach can benefit the project in many ways. The long-standing relationship between builder and architect instills familiarity with each other's design expectations and building practices. When the builder is involved in the project from inception, there is a depth of knowledge present before construction even begins. Communication avenues are efficient and utilized often. We can estimate costs and offer ideas for building efficiently during the design process.
